The problem of waste piling up in Homs neighborhoods is getting worse because bags are left outside bins or left open, residents do not put them out at the designated times, and some children dump rubbish indiscriminately. Waste is scattered when bags tear or stray dogs rummage through them, adding to sanitation workers’ burden and contributing to bad odors, insects, rodents, and the risk of pollution and disease. Tackling the problem means placing securely tied bags inside bins and observing collection schedules, while the municipality improves bin-emptying services and raises residents’ awareness.
