Berlin elderly woman faces 14,000 euro bill

An 82-year-old woman in the Blankenfelde area near Berlin received an electricity bill amounting to 14,558 euros, despite insisting that the amount is disproportionate to her actual consumption. The gas company, GASAG, explained that the bill was based on inaccurate estimates of annual usage, and that replacing the meter in August 2025 revealed a much lower consumption, recording approximately 1,294 kilowatt-hours over nine months. The company emphasized that there may be other reasons for the previous high consumption, such as shared electrical connections or high-power appliances, and urged a technical inspection of the network and advised reporting to the police in case of tampering or theft.
