Sony plans to phase out physical PlayStation disc support by 2028
Sony announced its plan to completely cease manufacturing and selling physical discs for PlayStation games starting January 2028, focusing instead on digital distribution through the PlayStation Store and digital codes in retail stores. The company indicated that this change reflects the growing demand for digital content, and it will impact the used game market. Support for PlayStation stores on older devices such as PS3 and Vita will gradually be phased out between 2026 and 2027. Meanwhile, current PlayStation consoles will continue to support discs, as the future generation moves toward full reliance on digital formats.
