The U.S. Department of Justice has reopened the opportunity to use TikTok on federal government devices after more than three years of banning the app due to security concerns related to data protection and national security. This change comes following a restructuring of TikTok’s operations within the United States, where American data is now managed through a new company owned 80.1% by both American and foreign investors, with data managed via Oracle’s cloud infrastructure in the U.S.. This move is attributed to reducing security risks, but it does not eliminate the federal agencies’ right to impose a ban on its use if they choose, as regulatory concerns about data protection and user privacy remain.
