The European Commission imposed a total fine of 890 million euros (about one billion dollars) on Google, marking the first penalty under the Digital Markets Act (DMA). The fine was issued due to Google's preference for its own services within search results and the restrictions imposed on app developers in the Google Play Store, which violate European competition rules. The Digital Markets Act aims to enhance competition and reduce the dominance of major tech companies by imposing obligations on “gatekeepers,” with Google expected to revise its policies to ensure future compliance and avoid further penalties. This fine is considered the beginning of more European measures targeting anti-competitive practices, despite Google's criticism of the negative impact on the quality of its services.
