The Chinese authorities imposed a fine of 5.18 billion yuan ($765 million) on Trip.com, China's largest travel booking platform, due to monopolistic practices that harmed consumer interests and prevented hotels from freely setting their prices across competing platforms. Investigations revealed that the company exploited its dominant position, controlling approximately 56% of the Chinese booking market, to restrict the operations of hotels on other platforms such as Fliggy, DuiIn, and Meituan, in an effort to maintain its market share. Trip.com affirmed its commitment to comply with the regulatory authority's decision, which is engaging with major tech companies to combat anti-competitive practices, amid concerns that fierce competition could impact hotel profit margins and the economy as a whole.
