Sam Altman, the founder of OpenAI, decided to delete TikTok from his phone after spending more than three hours on a single session, due to the powerful algorithms that subtly keep users engaged for long periods. Altman was testing the app while developing his platform Sora, which relied on AI-generated videos, but the high operating costs—reaching $15 million daily—led to the discontinuation of its development last March, resulting in significant financial losses and the cancellation of important partnerships like the huge Disney deal. He pointed out that TikTok's algorithms cause excessive content consumption and longer viewing times. His company is now working on developing a new AI device that focuses on user performance and outcomes rather than just duration of use.
