Android auto-uploads files to Drive

Google has launched a new feature that allows Android phone users to automatically back up documents and files stored on their devices directly to Google Drive. This feature, which is part of the stable release 26.26 of Google Play Services, began rolling out after a development and testing period that started last year, with gradual appearances in beta versions since July 2026. Activation of this feature requires manual enablement. It provides effective protection for files such as PDFs, Word documents, PowerPoint presentations, ZIP files, APK files, and files within the Downloads folder. Backups are organized within a folder named "Android backups" in Google Drive, with a subfolder assigned for each device linked to the account. It's important to note that this is a backup system rather than real-time synchronization; thus, files will not automatically update when modified on the phone or in the cloud. Users can also disable the feature at any time without deleting existing files. This feature offers an easy way to access important documents if the device is lost or replaced, but users should monitor their storage space carefully, as it can fill up quickly with increasing files and backups.
