Millions of users in Egypt received earthquake alerts on their Android phones, while iPhones did not send these alerts, despite their capability to detect earthquakes. They rely on different mechanisms for issuing notifications: Android uses a data collection system from motion and vibration sensors in millions of phones to detect earthquakes and warn users via internet networks, whereas iPhones depend on official data from government agencies and centralized sources. Activating alerts on iPhones requires the sensors to be available and official promotion, and manual setup of alert settings to ensure delivery. The study shows that Android phones can detect earthquakes early by aggregating data from nearby devices, while iPhones can also detect earthquakes if their sensors are available, though with less flexibility. For iPhones, alert settings must be manually enabled to ensure messages are received.
