The article points out that digital algorithms used to manage services in modern cities—such as delivery, navigation, housing, and credit—indirectly perpetuate racial and geographical discrimination. These algorithms rely on biased historical data, which leads to the reproduction of old discriminatory boundaries and the creation of "lost cities," where neighborhoods with predominantly non-white populations or lower economic levels are deprived of essential services like fast delivery, mortgage loans, and navigation assistance. As a result, economic and racial gaps widen, with some areas deteriorating and experiencing a decline in economic activity, deepening marginalization and rendering these communities digitally and socially isolated. The article calls for redirecting algorithms toward targeted investment and independent oversight to ensure equal opportunities and to achieve fairer, more inclusive cities.
