The article discusses the evolution of using smartphones as sensing networks for earthquake detection and early warning sending, rather than relying solely on ground-based monitoring stations. It explains that applications such as "MyShake," "Earthquake Network," and "Android Earthquake Alerts System" rely on the motion sensors in smartphones to identify vibrations that may indicate an earthquake, allowing for alerts to be sent before the more destructive seismic waves arrive. This can save lives and give users precious seconds to seek safety. Although these apps do not predict earthquakes before they happen, they help reduce damage and raise awareness of the necessary safety measures. Their effectiveness depends on the density of connected phones, internet speed, and smart technologies like machine learning.
