Meta fined half a billion over child issues in New Mexico

A court in the U.S. state of New Mexico has issued a verdict requiring Meta, the owner of Instagram and Facebook, to pay $567 million due to its failure to protect children and teenagers from the risks associated with using its platforms. This ruling comes amid increasing legal and regulatory pressures on tech companies, given the impact of algorithm design and recommendation mechanisms on the mental health of young users. Internal documents revealed that the company was aware of the negative effects of its applications, particularly Instagram, on teenage girls. Despite Meta investing hundreds of millions in protective tools, officials believe that current measures are insufficient and that platform design should prioritize the safety of children more. This reflects a global shift towards holding tech companies more accountable for the influence their products have on the mental health of new generations.
