Myanmar military permits envoy to meet Aung San Suu Kyi

For the first time since the 2021 coup, the military council leadership in Myanmar permitted a meeting with the detained leader Aung San Suu Kyi, in an effort to bolster the legitimacy of the regime, according to the Financial Times. This meeting is believed to be a calculated step aimed at improving the international image of the military regime, though it does not represent a genuine change in its policies, as Aung San Suu Kyi remains in custody in an unknown location and has been deprived of contact with her family since her arrest. This development comes amid ongoing international scrutiny and a crackdown by the military council to try to regain regional and global support, especially from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), as the economy continues to deteriorate with slow growth and declining oil prices.
