The article discusses the efforts of the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority in Egypt to combat the registration of mobile SIM cards under names that are not those of their actual owners. The issue has resurfaced after the appearance of SIM cards registered in the names of users without their knowledge, posing a security threat and jeopardizing individuals' digital identities. It was explained that the main reason for the spread of this phenomenon is that employees of telecommunications companies prioritize their sales targets, despite upper management being aware of illegal practices. This has led to the implementation of regulatory measures aimed at governing SIM registration, such as suspending the sale or activation of new SIM cards, sending alert messages to current users, and providing an electronic application to verify SIM cards registered in their names. The report also highlighted the importance of SIM cards in security and financial sectors, noting that counterfeit or unregistered SIMs can pose security risks and impact financial operations. Legal steps were also outlined for users who discover SIM cards registered in their names without their authorization.
