Taiwan reports AI hacking attacks on government

Taiwanese reports revealed that government institutions were subjected to cyberattacks originating from outside the island during July 2026. In these attacks, perpetrators employed advanced techniques, including human intervention and artificial intelligence agents like OpenClaw, to carry out targeted intrusions. The Ministry of Digital Affairs confirmed that the assaults were hybrid in nature, with evidence pointing to external sources, and that these threats coincided with rising tensions with China. Taiwan accuses China of employing hybrid warfare tactics that include hostile cyberattacks. In 2025, Taiwan recorded approximately 2.63 million attempted intrusions daily—an increase of 6% compared to the previous year—with a surge in Chinese cyber activities targeting the island's critical infrastructure. These attacks utilized AI-powered tools, highlighting the urgent need to strengthen protective measures and system monitoring to mitigate evolving threats.
