Meta introduces 15,000 smart glasses for the visually impaired

Meta announced its donation of 15,000 "Ray-Ban Meta" smart glasses to Vision Ireland Foundation to assist blind and visually impaired adults in Ireland, aiming to empower them with independence in daily life. These glasses incorporate technology that uses a camera, artificial intelligence, and voice commands, allowing users to interpret their surroundings, read text, and recognize objects through voice controls without using their hands, thereby reducing reliance on human assistance. The initiative focuses on training beneficiaries to use the glasses effectively, while considering privacy risks associated with covert imaging, which requires balancing health benefits with personal security. Previous experiences, such as their deployment for veterans in the United States, have shown increased independence in mobility and communication. This move represents an important step toward integrating smart assistive technology into the lives of those with visual disabilities.
