The trial of Meta, the company that owns Facebook and Instagram, has begun in Oakland, California, regarding allegations that the platforms are designed to encourage addictive use by children and teenagers. The United States accuses the company of employing technical features such as infinite scrolling, notifications, and recommendation algorithms to increase engagement time, despite being aware of the associated risks. Meta denies these claims. The case also involves violations of children's privacy rights, as it is alleged that Meta collected and used data from children under 13 without parental consent, in violation of online child privacy protection laws. The company faces fines potentially reaching $1.4 trillion, and authorities are demanding changes to the platforms' design. The trial is expected to last between six and eight weeks, with the possibility of high-level Meta executives being called to testify.
