Your Wi-Fi May Be Tracking You

A recent study from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology has revealed that regular Wi-Fi networks can be used as powerful, covert surveillance tools by analyzing radio waves to identify individuals and track their movements with nearly 100% accuracy—without the need for cameras or other connected devices. The technology exploits unencrypted signal enhancements, which are sent to improve connection quality, to detect and infer people's identities in public spaces and offices. Experts warn that this capability could pose a serious threat to privacy, especially if employed by authoritarian regimes. They also emphasize the need to develop future Wi-Fi standards, such as IEEE 802.11bf, which will turn Wi-Fi signals into smart radars capable of sensing and recognizing movement and gestures without the use of cameras.
