EU Parliament Discusses Robots to Address Worker Shortage
On the occasion of the European Parliament’s presentation in Brussels, fifteen AI-powered robotic systems were showcased, aimed at addressing the labor shortage caused by population aging and the declining workforce in the Eurozone, which is expected to lose around 11 million people by 2035. The demonstrations focused on specific tasks such as dismantling water pumps, organizing tools, and navigating work environments, with an emphasis on the fact that current robots handle repetitive tasks efficiently, but still lack the ability to fully cope with surprises or unexpected conditions. Robots are not viewed as a full substitute for humans, but rather as a solution to alleviate pressure on the labor market. European regulations are in place to govern the use of artificial intelligence to ensure safety and accountability. Additionally, there are ongoing challenges related to how the benefits of automation are distributed among companies, workers, and society.
