Unidentified breach of 3M US military data

A security breach that lasted approximately nine months has affected the United States Department of Defense's Human Resources Data Center system. Unauthorized attackers gained access to sensitive personal data of more than 3 million American military and civilian personnel, including Social Security numbers, names, birth dates, and military service information. The breach began in October 2025 and was discovered in July 2026, after the attackers exploited a vulnerability in an insufficiently secured file-sharing system. The department has not disclosed the technical nature of the vulnerability, the identity of the hackers, or whether the attack involved a traditional cyber assault or exploited weak security settings. The department confirms that the accessed data has not been misused to date, and that affected individuals have been notified and provided with identity monitoring services. However, the breach highlights the challenges of safeguarding large government databases and raises questions about the effectiveness of systems designed to monitor and detect intrusions within military institutions.
