Google plans space data centers as AI leaves Earth

Google launched a prototype satellite equipped with TPU chips to accelerate AI operations, aiming to test its ability to withstand space conditions such as radiation, vibrations, and temperature fluctuations. This step is part of a broader effort to establish space-based data centers that capitalize on the available solar energy in low Earth orbits, which can provide up to eight times the energy output of ground-based data centers. The project faces significant technical challenges, including cooling electronics in the space environment and reducing launch costs. If successful, it could transform orbits into integral parts of the global computing infrastructure, although the project remains in the experimental and research phase.
