China's AI Talent Race Outcome
The article discusses China's efforts to enhance its capabilities in artificial intelligence by facilitating the recruitment of international researchers and scientists and offering flexible research grants. This is an attempt to compete with the United States, which has imposed strict visa restrictions on work permits and talent retention within its borders. Despite these Chinese initiatives, the country faces a lack of interest from foreigners, while the number of Chinese scientists working in the United States has increased by approximately 4%. Chinese researchers account for 41% of authors at major research conferences, compared to 34% for Americans. China also invests in nurturing young talent and imposes restrictions on the departure of AI experts, aiming to retain their expertise domestically. Meanwhile, the country is actively seeking to bring back scientists currently in the United States, reflecting intense competition between the two nations for leadership in the global AI sector.
