Google links accounts to phone numbers unconsented

An article reveals the existence of a new mechanism by Google for verifying phone numbers on Android devices. This system operates by default and automatically links the phone number to all accounts registered on the device, including secondary accounts. This feature could potentially associate multiple numbers with different accounts without obtaining user consent, raising privacy concerns. The mechanism is used for account recovery, activating services, and determining location in emergency situations. However, it requires review and procedures to disable it if the user wishes to prevent certain numbers from being linked to their accounts.
