Nabeul artisans preserve traditional crafts
The craft of basket-making in the El Jebba region of the North Governorate is distinguished by its preservation across generations, despite market developments and changing consumption patterns. Craftswomen, such as Taqwa bin Alia, are working to develop this craft by creating modern designs for traditional products like bags and carriers, using materials such as leather and various colors, while adding creative touches to maintain their identity and cultural heritage. Craftswomen face challenges in marketing their products, especially in rural areas, despite demand from both locals and tourists. They call for greater support in promotional channels and exhibitions to enhance the presence of their products in local and international markets. This support is essential to sustain the craft and turn it into a sustainable source of income while preserving cultural heritage.
