Trump approves Nidal Hassan execution
U.S. President Donald Trump has approved the execution by hanging of Nidal Hasan, the Army psychiatrist who killed 13 people in a shooting attack at Fort Hood in Texas in 2009. This marks the first time the U.S. military has carried out an execution since 1961. A military jury sentenced him to death in 2013 after he opened fire on soldiers preparing to deploy to Iraq, resulting in 13 deaths and more than 30 injuries. Nidal Hasan, a Muslim of Palestinian origin, was opposed to the U.S. occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan and was connected online with Al-Qaeda leaders. The Department of Defense will determine the date and location of the execution.
