Controversy surrounds 2026 World Cup over Congolese goalkeeper
Media reports revealed that the goalkeeper of the Democratic Republic of the Congo national team, Lionel Mabasi, was likely ineligible to represent the team at the 2026 World Cup due to not completing all the necessary procedures with FIFA. Despite knowing about the violation before the tournament started, he was not prevented from participating, which sparked legal controversy in both the United States and Nigeria—especially after Nigeria was eliminated from qualifying by the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which advanced to the World Cup thanks to Mabasi’s involvement. This issue is expected to prompt further discussions regarding FIFA’s responsibility in managing player registration processes and the potential for this case to lead to future legal or sporting repercussions.
