Tunisie Telegraph: Algériens et Libyens se retirent la carte touristique change-t-elle
In August 2026, tourism in Tunisia experienced a significant decline due to a sharp decrease in the number of tourists coming from Algeria and Libya, with drops of 32.9% and 16.3% respectively. The number of overnight stays in hotels also fell by over 500,000 nights compared to the same month last year, with the occupancy rate decreasing from 82.6% to 72%. This decline is attributed to economic changes and new measures in neighboring countries, especially Algeria and Libya, such as currency exchange restrictions and increased taxes on vehicles, which affected residents' ability to travel. Meanwhile, the European market recorded a growth of 3.7%, despite declines in some smaller markets. The Tunisian tourism sector faces challenges in diversifying its markets and ensuring sustainable attraction of tourists from its neighbors, particularly amidst ongoing economic and political difficulties in the region.
