FAO: Over 45 million facing hunger
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) announced that over 45 million people in the Palestinian territories, Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, and Sudan are facing food insecurity at crisis levels or worse. The organization called for urgent investment in emergency agricultural assistance in the Middle East and North Africa region, due to the worsening hunger caused by conflicts, economic shocks, and climate pressures. It was also noted that funding gaps hinder the protection of agricultural production and livelihoods, with ongoing shortfalls—only 23% of the amount needed has been secured for Sudan, and less than 1% for Yemen. Efforts are underway to raise 2.75 million dollars to aid Syria, as well as 140.9 million dollars to support agriculture in Gaza and the West Bank, in addition to assisting 35,000 farmers and rural communities in Lebanon at a cost of 38 million dollars.
