Greenland intends to cull 1,000 ancient sharks
Greenland is planning to execute 1,000 Greenland sharks, a species that can live for over 400 years and is among the longest-living vertebrates on Earth, following approval from its municipal authorities last February. This step comes in response to appeals from local fishermen who complain that these large fish, which can reach approximately 20 feet, obstruct fishing lines and cause significant financial losses, as fishermen lose thousands of dollars worth of gear daily. However, environmental experts have warned that killing this species could cause irreversible environmental damage due to its slow sexual maturity and its ability to bear offspring for over a decade. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) classified the species as "endangered" in 2020. Conservation organizations have pointed out that the plan may be ineffective because it does not address the root causes of the problem, such as overfishing and the excessive number of boats, and that current solutions carry significant risks.
