Africa presses for two Security Council seats
Africa renewed its demand for equal representation in the United Nations Security Council through obtaining two permanent seats and five non-permanent seats. This was during the meeting of the ten-member African Reform Committee held in Tripoli. The committee, which includes countries such as Libya, Algeria, and the Congo, emphasized the need to end the historical injustice faced by the continent and to have fair representation that includes the veto right for the two permanent members. The meeting also acknowledged the importance of enhancing diplomatic coordination among African countries and unifying their positions to achieve the desired reforms, especially since Africa is currently represented by three non-permanent seats on the Security Council for 2026.
