Raw sugar prices near 19-month high
The prices of crude sugar futures on the Intercontinental Exchange rose to levels near a 19-month high, due to concerns about the impact of heavy rains associated with the El Niño phenomenon on sugar production in Brazil, the world's largest producer. The price increased by 2.3% to reach 20.72 cents per pound, after hitting a high of 21.24 cents last week. The record rainfall in September and expectations of its continuation into October are heavily influencing the market, which is very much dependent on Brazilian production and exports.
