Olive Oil Price Drop Prompts Producer Protests
The article focuses on the decline in olive oil prices in the Puglia region of Italy, where the price per kilogram has dropped from around 9 euros to approximately 4 euros. This price reduction threatens protests among olive farmers and mill owners due to the accumulation of last season's stock, which exceeded 200,000 tons and remains unsold, along with declining financial returns and increased production costs. Producers also attribute part of the price decline to imports from Tunisia and other countries within the European Union, increasing competitive pressures. This situation underscores the need for stricter controls over the source of the oil to ensure transparency and reduce fraud. The protests reflect growers’ concerns over a continued decline, which could threaten market stability and sales for the upcoming season. Additionally, this scenario places Tunisian olive oil exports into the spotlight amid ongoing debates about competition within the European market.
