Fifteen nations, including Jordan and Kuwait, join Human Rights Council
The United Nations General Assembly elected 15 countries to serve on the Human Rights Council starting next year for a three-year term, replacing the members whose terms end in December. Among the elected countries are Kuwait, Jordan, Nepal, Ukraine, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Nigeria, Brazil, and Germany. Jordan received 171 votes, and Kuwait received 173 votes within the Asia-Pacific group. The Council is composed of 47 members elected by secret ballot from General Assembly members. It meets in Geneva to discuss human rights violations and to make recommendations, with the possibility of re-electing countries that have not served two consecutive terms. The geographical distribution of seats includes countries from Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, and Western Europe, ensuring geographic balance in membership.
