The International Football Association (FIFA) imposed a fine of $20,000 on the Spanish Football Federation and required them to close 15% of the seats at the upcoming friendly match due to chants hostile to Islam emitted by Spanish fans during a match against Egypt in March 2026. The offensive chants occurred twice, prompting the announcer to intervene and issue warnings to the spectators. Spanish national team star Lamine Yamal expressed his rejection of the racist behavior, and FIFA's disciplinary committee emphasized that context determines the discriminatory nature, confirming that implicit language can be considered an insult or mockery.
