French PM seeks local curfews
French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has called for the imposition of a partial and limited curfew in several areas following acts of violence and looting that occurred in French cities over the weekend. This measure is part of efforts to contain chaos and protect shops, with the regions affected likely to be announced after consultations with mayors, and the possibility of declaring a state of emergency if necessary. Lecornu attributed the violence to mobs of rioters, thieves, and activists from the far left, acknowledging that in some cities, authorities have lost control, with buildings set on fire, stores destroyed, and about 2,400 people detained. The Prime Minister also urged improvements in police strategies to prevent a recurrence of looting and clashes, amid concerns that the situation may escalate before the elections.
