Tunisia's Red and White Flag Turns 199
Tunisia's celebration of the 199th anniversary of its national flag reflects a historical symbol that connects the country's Ottoman past with its modern national identity. The flag, which features a red background with a white circle in the center containing a red crescent and star, was first used during the reign of Hussein Bay II following the Naval Battle of Navarino. Its design is linked to significant historical naval confrontations. Although it bears a resemblance to the Turkish flag, it maintains a distinct visual identity and is regarded as a symbol representing Tunisia's struggle for independence and survival—elements that remain etched in the national memory despite major political changes, from the rule of the Beys to French colonialism and the republic. Today, the Tunisian flag continues to embody symbols of unity and continuity of national identity, reflecting its long history and its connection to Tunisia’s journey toward building an independent modern state.
