According to preliminary midterm election results, Democrats won 52 Senate seats to the Republicans’ 40 and moved closer to taking control of the House, with 161 seats to the Republicans’ 94 as votes continued to be counted. Their gains included flipping six House seats held by Republicans and scoring surprise victories in Republican states, amid voter dissatisfaction over the cost of living, immigration policies and the war with Iran. Donald Trump congratulated the Democrats and pledged to work with them, while their control of one or both chambers could constrain his legislative agenda and pave the way for investigations into his administration.
