Palestinian-American Abeer Qawas won the Democratic primary for the New York State Senate seat representing District 12 in Queens, becoming the first Palestinian Muslim woman to win such a race at the state level. Her campaign focused on the cost of living, affordable housing, and the rights of tenants and immigrants. She also called for an end to funding what she described as the genocide in Gaza. She will run in the November general election.
