India stampede causes 19 deaths
Nineteen people were killed, including a 7-year-old girl, and around 25 others were injured following a stampede during a Hindu religious celebration in the city of Kolkata, eastern India, after sudden rainfall caused chaos among the crowds. The unexpected announcement of the onset of rain increased tension, as the crowd began to surge forward quickly, leading to falls and pushing. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences to the victims' families and offered support to the injured, while authorities confirmed that stampedes have previously occurred at Hindu religious events due to poor organization and safety lapses.
