Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary in Dubai is one of the most important environmental sites that balance nature conservation with urban development. It was designated in 2007 as the first wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention. The site hosts a diverse variety of migratory and local birds, houses 52 species of fish, and includes 24 species that are threatened with extinction. Around 25,000 birds are recorded during the winter season. Currently, a development project worth 650 million dirhams is underway to enhance biodiversity, increase the area of mangrove trees, expand water bodies, improve the sanctuary’s capacity to absorb carbon dioxide, and introduce walking and cycling paths in order to support sustainable eco-tourism.
