The trial of Waseem Al-Assad, cousin of the former Syrian regime president Bashar Al-Assad, began in Damascus on charges related to war crimes and crimes against humanity dating back to 2011. The accusations include forming and managing unauthorized armed groups, inciting violence, and exploiting family influence—part of efforts to hold accountable those involved in the violations witnessed in the country. The judge confirmed that these crimes do not prescribe over time, and the live broadcast of the trial was suspended to preserve the confidentiality of the testimonies.
