Damascus trial of the prominent Lion
The trial of Wassim al-Assad, cousin of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, has begun in Damascus on charges related to war crimes and crimes against humanity, including repression of the uprising since 2011. The allegations claim that he established and led two armed groups in Eastern Ghouta and contributed to the killing of a large number of civilians. Additionally, charges include drug smuggling and extortion. This is considered the first publicly held trial of a member of the Assad family and represents part of the transitional justice efforts in Syria.
