The new Iraqi Prime Minister, Ali Al-Zaydi, faces significant challenges in efforts to weaken the influence of armed factions affiliated with Iran and bring them under state control, amid mounting American pressures to push Baghdad to curb these groups. Although Al-Zaydi has issued orders to reduce the independence of these armed factions and integrate them within government institutions, some groups, such as the Kata'ib Hezbollah, still refuse to comply, reflecting the difficulty of achieving full dominance over these factions. Their influence dates back to after 2003 and has increased amid ongoing tensions between Iranian and American influence in Iraq.
