The Israeli Army Archives published detailed diaries of the operation to capture Sergeant Gilad Shalit on June 25, 2006, near the Kerem Shalom crossing, which resulted in him being trapped inside the tank. The documents revealed that the army forces discovered his absence after an hour and 27 minutes, and continued attempts to locate him before making the "Hannibal" decision, which entailed halting any rescue efforts to save him alive, even if it meant killing the soldier. Shalit remained a prisoner in Gaza for five years before he was released in a prisoner exchange deal with Hamas, in exchange for more than a thousand Palestinian prisoners.
