The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime report highlights a growing spread of ketamine use across Europe and the world, with the number of users reaching 331 million in 2024, representing 6.2% of the global population aged 15 to 64. Germany is considered the second-largest distribution hub for the substance, particularly since its regulatory laws allow for its sale under pharmaceutical regulations, which facilitates its proliferation. The report confirms that ketamine is used medically as an anesthetic and pain reliever, but it is also recreationally abused. It is often clandestinely manufactured in countries like India, with increasing health risks associated with addiction. Europe has also seen a rise in deaths related to its use, and the region faces escalating legal and health challenges.
