A group of mothers and women’s rights advocates in Baghdad organized a protest against the new amendments to the Personal Status Law, which were approved over a year ago and are based on the jurisprudential code of the Shia sect. The amendments leave ambiguity regarding the right to custody before reaching the age of majority, especially concerning child custody, amidst ongoing debate about their impact on family stability and children’s rights. Civilian groups are calling for a reconsideration of these amendments and the activation of community dialogue to ensure the rights of all family members.
