Algeria begins parliamentary voting
Voting centers in Algeria opened today to elect members of the People's National Assembly for a new term, with more than 24 million voters participating. A total of 846 electoral lists, comprising 9,886 candidates, are competing for 407 seats. There is an expected low turnout due to weak campaigning and the summer season. The nominations include 21% women and 54% youth under the age of 40. Voting is conducted under a proportional system with open lists and preferential voting. Polls close today at 7 p.m., with a possibility of delay until 8 p.m.
