Conflict harms Sudan’s improved livestock
The livestock sector in Sudan has been severely affected by the ongoing war, with the country losing around 320,000 crossbred cattle in Khartoum State and another 100,000 in Al-Jazira State. These are improved, genetically enhanced breeds that have been invested in for decades to increase productivity. Looting and theft, especially by Rapid Support Forces, have resulted in the destruction of hundreds of thousands of cattle, coupled with weakened veterinary care services, thereby threatening the genetic heritage and making recovery difficult. Efforts to rebuild the herd and rehabilitate the breeds could take decades and require massive investments, while research centers and breeding programs have been significantly impacted during the conflict.
