Vinícius Júnior clarified that he did not take the penalty awarded to Brazil in the Round of 16 match of the 2026 World Cup against Norway, because he believes that his teammate, Bruno Girmarães, executes it "better" than him, and that the decision to choose the penalty taker is up to the coach. He confirmed that the coach selected Bruno to take the penalty based on statistics, and that he did not avoid responsibility but trusts in improving his readiness for future matches. Norway's team won the match 2-1, eliminating Brazil from the tournament.
