Europe is experiencing an unusually early and severe fire season this year, with widespread wildfires breaking out in southern France, Spain, Portugal, and Greece during a heatwave and drought that have worsened conditions and reduced moisture levels. In France, approximately 4,600 hectares of forests have burned, and 10,000 people have been evacuated. Authorities are actively battling these fires, deploying 700 firefighters and 200 machinery, amid forecasts of temperatures rising to 40°C. In Spain, a wildfire scorched 2,200 hectares and has been brought under control; authorities continue their efforts to prevent further spread. Meanwhile, in Portugal, efforts are ongoing to contain a blaze that has burned 13,000 hectares, testing their containment capacity. In Greece, multiple fires have been extinguished, but there remains a significant risk of new fires due to high temperatures and strong winds.
